I'm using w3m-el 1.3.3-2 (deb) with XEmacs 21.4.12 (deb) and Emacs21
(deb) on Debian sid (unstable), but fine, no problem now.

I had met compile-error just a few times with "apt-get upgrade" by
some timings for compiling emacsen's modules or something, then some
package did not install completely with both Emacs21 or XEmacs.

Did you try "apt-get update; apt-get install --reinstall w3m-el" ?
