I'm using emacs-w3m (cvs) with emacs-22.1.50 on Debian Etch.

No need that ;-).

In cvs version, you could find lines below;

ChangeLog> 2007-03-23  Katsumi Yamaoka  <yamaoka@xxxxxxx>

If you compiled emacs-w3m from source, and you have
(require 'w3m-load) in your init-file of emacs, it would be better to
recheck your configure options (in configure.log), load-path, or
required programs written in README file.

Did you have some errors?
