Same problem. However
# su - nobody
$ HOME=/tmp emacs -l w3m-load -f w3m
Works OK.

So something in the latest upgrade caused something in
http://jidanni.org/comp/configuration/ files to react bad.

Doing
# dpkg -i w3m-el-snapshot_1.4.387+0.20100304-1_all.deb #fixes it
# aptitude forbid-version w3m-el-snapshot
# apt-cache policy w3m-el-snapshot
w3m-el-snapshot:
  Installed: 1.4.387+0.20100304-1 #good
  Candidate: 1.4.392+0.20100329-1 #bad
