Do you get a similar result by the plain w3m? I.e.,
$ w3m https://wordnik.com/words/history
If you're willing to a bit more trouble, how about upgrading it
to the latest one?
$ git clone git://anonscm.debian.org/collab-maint/w3m.git
No problem here so far. I use:
emacs-w3m-version => "1.4.551"
emacs-version => "GNU Emacs 25.0.50.1 (i686-pc-cygwin, ...)"
w3m-version => "w3m/0.5.3+git20150503"
