Do you mean that you don't want the colored "underscore" characters to
appear? Those are 'non-breaking spaces', and their display is controlled
by the emacs variable `nobreak-char-display'. If I understood your
report, and that is your criticism, then as a first step, try evaluating
(setq nobreak-char-display nil), and tell us if the result is good for
you.
It does seem to me to be a reasonable idea to set that value nil by
default system-wide, not just for w3m ... Is that the case?
I don't have an opinion either way specifically for emacs-w3m.
