Cookie problems

Apologies if I've missed something obvious during installation.
I'm running emacs 21.3, emacs-w3m 1.3.4 and w3m-ssl 0.3-2.4. All are
Debian packages.
I'm trying to use emacs-w3m to access www.livejournal.com, but I'm
having what I suspect are cookie-related problems. When I log in, I
seem to be logged in for only one page view. So, for instance, I log
in, see the login preferences page, but whenever I click past I'm
logged back out again.
I've tried this with plain w3m and it works fine, so I'm thinking that
my w3m configuration is fine. I also have a ~/.w3m/cookies file with
the cookies inside. Note that when running from emacs-w3m, I don't
think the cookies file is created.
Any suggestions? Am I missing something vital?
