spell checking in the TEXT: minibuffer area

In the minibuffer
  TEXT:
input area, there is no way to check one's spelling. If one does
  M-$ (translated from <escape> $) runs the command ispell-word
one causes
  ispell-overlay-window: Attempt to split minibuffer window
And my favorite
  M-TAB (translated from <escape> <tab>) runs the command flyspell-auto-correct-word
has now become bound to
  M-TAB (translated from <escape> <tab>) runs the command complete-symbol.

(I type ESC because I am an old dog who never learned new ALT tricks.)
