M runs the command w3m-view-url-with-external-browser
It asks you for confirmation unless you are on top of a link, whereupon
it executes forthwith.
I find that strange...
Let's make a deal: How about new defaults:
m open the current link in an external browser.
M open the current page in an external browser.
m is the only one that will now fail, if the cursor is not upon a link.
Both could optionally be configured to ask for confirmation.
That way no more overloaded key worry landmines.
