This has already been fixed in the development version of emacs-w3m.
Could you try it? You can get it from:
http://cvs.namazu.org/emacs-w3m.tar.gz
Or the CVS server:
http://emacs-w3m.namazu.org/index-en.html#download
Please note that you have to run the autoconf command in advance
since the development version does not contain the configure script.
