testing branch

Would there be benefit to the project to create one or more testing
branches, inspired by the likes of what debian does for its
distributions. The idea would be to have pull requests never merged
directly into master, but into one or more levels 'testing', 'unstable',
or 'experimental'. Then, over time and after community testing (such as
it is with the zillions of feedack the mailing list gets), changes can
be moved along to master. The project then could also offer more than
one version to MELPA, for users to decide how adventurous they want to
be.
