Why have the ❤ characters U+2764 (HEAVY BLACK HEART) disappeared
in your reply?

(Your reply is a multipart mail with seperate parts for each ❤ but
these parts have no charse and the ❤ character seems to have been

Yes. But the actual glyph depends on the font used.  In some fonts it
is a question mark in a black diamond shape, in some fonts it is a
question mark in a square, in other fonts just an empty box.

I still get U+FFFD here which is displayed as white space when using
XEmacs with Xft support and as a fence-like symbol when using XEmacs
with X core font support. Both is of course strange.
